Most NFTs are crap, but these NFTs are good art.
I’m already a curmudgeon and the amount of crap NFTs that pass my eyes is causing me despair. There has to be some good art amongst all the immature aesthetic fluff being produced and sold to collectors who I suspect buy with their ears as they most probably have 2 glass eyes?
OK, rant over, try to be positive.
I’m going to bounce around the internetty for an hour and see if I can stumble upon some good ART NFTs
Too easy, first good artwork found in a matter of seconds….
How good is this!!!
Oneiric Tail by @mendezmendez
Current bid of .5 ETH for this 1/1 which is great value for good art.
Next we have this wonderful artwork by Katherina "Kate the Cursed" Jesek
16-bit psychedelia by Katherina "Kate the Cursed" Jesek
Already sold for .66 ETH, a bargain and a good score for the collector with a good eye.
Next we go to Makersplace to find Derrick Mullins
Edition: 1 of 1
Chi
This one you really have to click this LINK to really appreciate how stunningly good it is. Here’s just a snapshot of the animation. Do yourself a favour and watch it all the way through, full of beautiful surprises.
Sold an Hour ago for .88 ETH
So far, everything is affordable, however if you have ETH burning a hole in your pocket then I would recommend Hannes Hummel
https://makersplace.com/hanneshummel/
An artist with a sophisticated aesthetic that doesn’t rely on cheap gimmicks. The difference is obvious to anyone who understands art, The perfect marriage between subject, content and skill to create logically consistent worlds which say more than “geez whizz bang look at this effect (which will date badly soon)”
I’m next off to SuperRare to see if they’ve improved their curatorship?
Of their “New Artists On SuperRare” I’ve found 2 that are good.
Matthew Stone

“Painting is an early form of VR” Digital artist combining traditional painting mediums with 3D software.
Dreaming
Edition 1 of 1
In ‘Dreaming’ a gestural brushstroke floats free from the canvas. Brushes and paint strokes have been used for thousands of years to render and represent visions of reality in art. Here, the brushstroke, the means of representation, represents itself as a digital and sovereign being. The traditional linen canvas transforms from the organic ground of being, to backdrop and void for a new realm of liberated activity. “Real world, physically painted brushstrokes are the genesis of my largely digital, creative process. This work holds the sense of elegance, expansiveness and peace I hope to find and share with those who connect with my work.”
Here’s a clue when looking at art, this image grabbed my attention instantly, I knew it was good, then after glancing at the artist’s statement I knew this guy has his head screwed on and is the real deal, a genuine artist.
In the long term your best bet is to buy the artist, not follow the lemmings.
The second artist is a no brainer Frederik Heyman
Belgium
frederikheyman.com
Heyman’s work, created in a digitally altered environment, results in digital installations. He stages worlds out of relics from the past, exploring the desire to overcome humanity. Technology and the human body are the protagonists. His imagery, whether based on fact or fiction, ask us how we want to remember. This reflects in his commissioned works as well in his personal, more eclectic oeuvre. CLIENTS: Arca, Nike, Lady Gaga, Burberry, Nowness, Paper,… INSTAGRAM@frederikheyman
CEREMONIAL FORMALITY – Chapter A
Edition 1 of 1
Ceremonial Formality explores the post-human body under influence and in interaction with technology, the desire to overcome humanity. A surrender to an external higher force, the protagonist taking control via mechanics to reach an emotional state of empowerment. “Transcending the limitations of our natural condition.” This work was originally created for ShowStudio.
Now I’m not usually seduced by entrants to the NFT scene that come from an industry that employs their skills. This work for me is borderline between a dazzling techno gimmick and art. I think it does transcend its Whizz Bang nature to become art. Someone to keep an eye on in the future.
Who else is good?
Daniel Crossan
TipSea 1/1 for 0.1 ETH
TipSea appears when you are perfectly balanced between being sober and drunk. She is great fun to be around but unfortunately, she always seems to leave pretty soon after she arrives.
Everybody says “do your own research” when collecting artists, but then they run like lemming towards what everyone else is buying.
Meanwhile you miss what sitting there in plain fucking sight, a real artist who is the real deal
PS, If you cant tell the difference from the above and so much ham fisted art out there, then you should stop collecting and open some art books and do some learning.
OK next, I’ve watched as PolyAnnie has grown from strength to strength
This is good art and if you consider yourself a collector of some repute and you don’t have a NFT of hers, consider yourself blind.
Finally The Same
New Face #003 1/1
New Face #029 1/1
New face # 054 1/1
The first series of Masks were 0.2 ETH, then 0.4 ETH and the latest are 0.8 Eth great value for a 1/1 and you can still get one.
What I like about “The Same” is his able to transcend the notion of the collectible and also make it art. These are works of art that exist in a collectible form. These are not just shitty collectible ideas made for a quick buck. Take the time to look at them, each is a 1/1 and each has been perfectly conceived.
OK, that took an hour to do….the speed dating version of collecting, but with an eye for quality.
The problem with many of the collectors is they have too many NFTs and little of any artistic quality.
Leaving out the 2 very expensive artists, there are 7 affordable artists above where the 1 of each would in itself make for a wonderful start to building a great collection.
A great collection can be 20-30 affordable NFTs a year.
Some collections into the hundreds can be cut back to 30 good works, the rest are dross of no future value.
PS excuse the grammar and spelling mistakes etc, this was a rant and exercise to come up with a good collection within an hour’s scramble.
